Life Model:
In 2008, I was first introduced to the ideas of Jim Wilder, then known as “Thriving.” Jim Wilder connects principles and discoveries from psychology and neuroscience with the age-old principles of faith in Jesus Christ. The emphasis on relationships and connection deeply moved me.
Jim Wilder developed the Life Model, which describes the ideal development of a person in each phase of life, from infancy to old age. It outlines the developmental tasks and skills that are crucial for each specific phase. When one of these tasks or skills is not learned or achieved, developmental imbalances may occur, and restoration and healing become necessary. The Life Model provides the tools to initiate the process of restoration and healing.
Immanuel Approach:
In addition to the ideas of Thriving, I am also deeply enthusiastic about the approach developed by psychiatrist Karl Lehman. He and Jim work closely together in their methods. Karl has focused in his practice and personal life on healing emotional wounds, particularly on how healing can occur by building an interactive relationship with God. This is called the “Immanuel Approach.” Below is a brief explanation:
As humans, our brains have special neurons that help us form relationships with others. These are called mirror neurons, and they can either be “on” or “off.” One of Karl’s key insights is that when these neurons are “off,” we often feel wounded or respond from a place of hurt. It is therefore essential to turn them back “on.” Developing the ability to appreciate the good things in life and intentionally reflecting on moments when God felt very close are skills that help keep these neurons “on” and make life a blessing!
Prepare 4 Joy:
In May 2012, together with a group of about ten people, we established a committee to promote Thriving and the Immanuel Approach in the Netherlands. I have the privilege of serving as the chair of this committee. We have also founded a nonprofit organization called Prepare 4 Joy. Through the foundation, several books have been translated, including Joy Starts Here. These books are available through Archippus Publishing. If you would like to stay informed about the foundation’s activities and developments, you can send me an email.
The Meaning of Immanuel:
Immanuel means “God with us.” I consciously chose this name because the presence of the Living God in our lives is at the heart of the treatment I aim to provide. My mission is to reconnect people to God, others, and themselves through Jesus Christ, enabling them to experience healing and restoration from past trauma.
